Action-Oriented
Appraisals: Review Performance and Preview Challenges
Beverly Smallwood,
Ph.D.
Who Should Attend:
Leaders and Potential Leaders
Time: 2-4 hours
Prerequisite: From
Team Cop to Team Coach
Performance
appraisals are among the most misused management tools. Because
of this, they are approached as a dreaded yearly exercise by
managers and employees alike. This workshop is designed to
change that.
“From Team Cop to
Team Coach” is a prerequisite to this program because the
effective performance appraisal is a summary of coaching
communications that have taken place throughout the evaluation
period. Added to the manager’s observations are those of
several internal and external “customers” of the individual,
allowing for a valid look at the employee’s performance from
various perspectives and experiences. Further, an active two-way
discussion of upcoming challenges and goals multiplies the
probability of future achievement.
In this hands-on
workshop, participants will:
- Debunk 8 myths about
performance appraisals;
- Analyze their own
areas of resistance that can impede productive discussion;
- Learn how to prepare
themselves and the employee in ways that set the stage for an
interactive, helpful discussion;
- Practice a
step-by-step process for performance evaluations, first looking
back at performance, then planning for the future;
- Discover techniques
for engaging the employee in career planning, making it more
likely that the person will remain motivated and engaged with
the organization;
- Anticipate common
emotional reactions (e.g., hurt feelings, defensiveness, anger,
detachment), and learn strategies for dealing with each.
